==Names==
The original Paiwan name for the area was Tjakuvukuvulj ((unicode:Tjakuvukuvuɬ); historically rendered as ''Chaobo Obol'' or ). Ethnic Chinese settlers noted a rock outcropping in the shape of a lion's head (''(unicode:Sai-á-thâu-soaⁿ)'' , lit. "Lion-head mountain") and named the aboriginal village (''hoan-siā'' ) ''(unicode:Sai-á-thâu-siā)'' (, lit. "Lion-head aboriginal village") for it. Under Kuomintang occupation, this became ''Shīzǐ Xiāng'' () though in Taiwanese the name ''(unicode:Sai-á-thâu)'' () is still normally used in spoken contexts.〔 ISBN 9575963148〕
